This book is one of a series developed from the author's earlier book English Weights: an illustrated survey. That book contains an outline of weights of all types and periods, without in any sense claiming completeness.
Each book in the present series offers a more comprehensive survey and analysis of one of the major classes of weights. For recent weights the aim is to provide a fairly complete catalogue of the known types. For older weights that is not always possible, and the aim is therefore to survey all the main types. A complementary aim is to describe the historical context for the use of weights of various kinds, and the many different weight-systems which have been employed. Although it is not appropriate to refer in detail to the extensive research which lies behind the text and the classification-scheme, each book has an annotated bibliography to guide the reader who requires more inform
