On the back cover:
Brian J Cross has been involved in site research for over eighteen years through the hobby of metal detecting and the need to find productive sites on which to practice the hobby. This led to the printing of his first book in 1988, "More than 1,000 Roman sites in England, Scotland & Wales", a bible for metal detector users who neither had the time nor the inclination to spend many months in libraries wading through books and manuscripts doing the necessary research to help them build a picture of the history of an era.
